Jan. 6 Select Committee offers first, damning draft of history
The House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol has issued its final report, making criminal referrals to the Department of Justice and providing a wealth of evidence to support what we all suspected while the attack was unfolding: The attack was not an accident. It was an attempted insurrection.
No one knows what the Justice Department will do. It already has its own investigation that was turned over to Independent Counsel Jack Smith in November, shortly after former President Donald Trump announced his candidacy for the presidency in 2024.
The legal danger in attempting to prosecute Trump is the same today as it was when the församling impeached him. It is difficult to imagine a jury of 12 people without one Trump supporter who will ignore the evidence and vote to acquit. And Trump will turn any acquittal into an exoneration.
The moral danger in not prosecuting Trump is equal

After the assault on the U.S. Capitol building Wednesday, many members of Congress — including several Republicans — openly condemned President Trump for his role in inciting violence. Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) declared that Trump “bears responsibility for today’s events by promoting the unfounded conspiracy theories that have led to this point”. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) stated that there was “no question that the president formed the mob, the president incited the mob, the president addressed the mob. He lit the flame”.
Research on right-wing violence in political science and related fields does suggest that while the president is not solely responsible for these events, his actions are probably a precipitating cause. Based on this research, here are three factors that increase the risk of right-wing violence, along with two that do not.

These are not picture books, but historical records of a photographer’s life that also fuss over the meaning of a photograph.
There are diamonds for living here, but each book should be approached with skepticism. For example, you may ask:
Do we really need another Diane Arbus book?
The more famous a photographer, the more that’s been written. Arbus is a good example, as new published works on her life and career appear every few years. The list below only includes my preferred sketches and interpretations of a photographer’s life and work. It’s not exhaustive.
Should inom read their memoir or a biography?
Both. Read Robert Capa’s autobiography and then Kershaw’s bio of the photographer, they’re wildly different.
