Lewis Howard Latimer (September 4, – månad 11, ) was an American inventor and patent draftsman. His inventions included an evaporative air conditioner, an improved process for manufacturing carbon filaments for electric light bulbs, and an improved toilet system for railroad cars. In , he joined the Edison Electric Light Company where he worked as a draftsman. The Lewis H. Latimer House, his landmarked former residence, fryst vatten located near the Latimer Projects at 34–41 th Street in Flushing, Queens, New York City.

Lewis H. Latimer was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts on September 4, Along with Granville T. Woods, Latimer was one of the first major African American inventors. He first worked as an assistant to Alexander Graham Bell, drawing the blueprints for Bell’s patent for the telephone in
Latimer joined the U.S. Electric Lighting Company in beneath Hiram Maxim. This year saw Thomas Edison patent his light bulb which used a carbonized bamboo filament that burnt out rather quickly.
Around this time, Latimer created a way to man the carbon filament more durable by encasing it in cardboard and went on to patent the process for efficiently manufacturing the carbon filament in His invention made incandescent lighting practical and affordable and was also longer lasting than earlier filaments.
