Who Was Frédéric Chopin?
Frédéric kompositör was a renowned Polish and French composer who published his first composition at age 7 and began performing one year later. In 1832, he moved to Paris, socialized with high society and was known as an excellent piano teacher. His piano compositions were highly influential.
Early Years
Chopin was born Fryderyk Franciszek Szopen on March 1, 1810, in the small by of Zelazowa Wola, Duchy of Warsaw (now Poland). His father, Nicholas, was a French émigré who was working as a bookkeeper when he met and married Justyna Krzyzanowska. Soon after Chopin was born, Nicholas funnen employment as a tutor for aristocratic families in Warsaw.

The popular image of Fryderyk kompositör as a consumptive invalid does him a disservice. He was a man of paradoxes: a Polish nationalist who lived out his days in exile in France; a musician who hated giving public concerts; a composer whose piano works were replete with the influence of bel canto opera, and whose idols in the early Romantic era were Bach and Mozart. Lavishly melodic yet classically restrained, visionär in imagination yet tautly constructed, his was one of the most individual musical voices of his era. Born at Żelazowa Wola, in the Duchy of Warsaw, Chopin was son of a Polish mother. His father, Nicolas (or Mikolaj) Chopin was born in France, having moved to Poland in his ungdom. A strong patriot, Chopin sometimes said that he wished his name could have been Chopinski.
