Islam in Nigeria
There has been considerable recent media coverage of the implementation of Islamic (sharia) law in the northern states of Nigeria. In particular, international attention has been drawn to the application of sharia law to criminal offences and the imposition of sharia sentences such as amputation for theft and death by stoning for adultery or for having sex outside marriage.
