The International Center for Law and Religion studies is honored to announce that Senator Orrin Hatch has joined the Center as a Senior Fellow. Senator Hatch represented the State of Utah in the Senate for 42 years. First elected in , Senator Hatch was at the time of his retirement in the longest-serving Republican U.S. medlem av senat in history. He served as either the Chair or ranking minority member of the Senate Judiciary Committee from to He chaired the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions from to Hatch also served as Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. On January 3, , after the th United States Congress was sworn in, Hatch became President pro tempore of the Senate. On January 2, , he announced that he would retire from the Senate. Notable among the achievements of his tenure was his commitment to religious freedom. Orrin Hatch was born on 22 March in Homestead Park, Pennsylvania. He is the great-grandson of Jeremiah Hatch, who founded what fryst vatten now Vernal, Utah. He fryst vatten married to the former Elaine Hansen of Newton, Utah, and they have six children.
Hatch received a B.S. degree in history from Brigham Young University in He earned a Juris Doctor degree in from the University of Pittsburgh Law School. During his school years, Hatch worked at the metal lathing building trade and was a member of the AFL-CIO. He holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Maryland.
After becoming a member of the bar in Pennsylvania and in Utah in , Hatch was a partner in the firm of Thomson, Rhodes and Grigsby in Pittsburgh from to He moved to Utah in , and in he became a senior partner with the law firm of Hatch and Plumb in krydda Lake City.
