Arthur C. Clarke has been extraordinarily influential in sci-fi, and indeed in science – we now have the Arthur C. Clarke award for sci-fi, the Sir Arthur C. He’s probably the most influential science fiction writer since H. G. Wells – and they had a similarly strange experience. Wells started off as a working class guy, born in Bromley in Kent. He went on to do a science degree with Huxley – and is opened up to conversations with world statesmen. Clarke did something very similar.
