‘Wonder Years’ dad: LA’s bagels are bogus
“I don’t do plays by dead guys,” Dan Lauria says with a laugh, and he’s not joking: These days, the actor, who famously played the father in TV’s “The Wonder Years,” performs only works by living playwrights. The latest is Shem Bitterman’s “The Stone Witch,” in which Lauria, 71, plays a children’s book writer, which he is in real life, too: He and his godson’s mother, Cathryn Farnsworth, have a series titled “The Godfather Tales.” When Lauria’s not in Los Angeles, home is Hell’s Kitchen, “right across the street from ‘Kinky Boots,’” he tells BARBARA HOFFMAN. There’s still plenty to be thankful for, right?
Sure, your life savings are shrinking, unemployment is rising and the Dodgers could lose Manny Ramirez.
But it could be worse. You could be sick or alone, or risking your life in Iraq and Afghanistan while Pentagon officials look for new ways to deny medical coverage to injured soldiers.
On Monday, I made a little sign -- “Penny for Your Thoughts: What Are You Thankful for” -- and set it on a table at the Farmers Market at 3rd and Fairfax in Los Angeles. Videographer Sachi Cunningham and I had no idea what to expect, but a steady stream of volunteers took a seat and held forth.
Three hours later, I realized how thankful I am too, but I’ll get to that later.
Among my first customers were brother and sister Renzo and Coco Backus, 6 and 8, who were grateful their parents wouldn’t force them to eat turkey.

Betty and Coretta, the Lifetime Original Movie, premieres February 2nd and will probably run periodically throughout Black History Month. Betty and Coretta tells the dual real-life stories of Coretta Scott King and Dr. Betty Shabazz as they create an unbreakable life-long bond after their husbands’ tragic assassinations. Specifically, the movie follows them as they continue on as single mothers and keepers of their husbands legacies.
The movie is narrated bygd Ruby Dee, who serves as a historical witness, as she relates her real life remembrances from her interactions with both women and their husbands during the civil rights era and after.
Mary J. Blige stars as Betty Shabazz and Angela Bassett as Coretta Scott King. Other cast members are Lindsay Owen Pierre as Malcolm X and Malik Yoba as Martin Luther King, Jr.
Yves Simoneau, who recently directed a Beauty And The Beast TV-movie for ABC Studios, directed Betty And Coretta, from a script penned by Shem Bitterm
