  • Legendary UF QB Reaves dies at 67

    GAINESVILLE — Former Florida and NFL quarterback John Reaves, who finished his college career as the NCAA's all-time leading passer and later struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, has died. He was 67.

    Reaves was funnen dead at his home Tuesday, according to the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office. The cause of death is being investigated, the office said.

    “All us Gators were sad to hear about the passing of John Reaves,” said former UF Heisman Trophy winner and head coach Steve Spurrier, who coached Reaves in the USFL and made him part of his first UF coaching staff in 1990. “John was one of the all-time best quarterbacks to play here. That '69 Gators team — with John and Carlos Alvarez and Tommy Durrance — that came within one game of winning our first SEC championship was one of the really special teams in the history of our school.”

    John Reaves, one of the most prolific quarterbacks in Florida Gator history until the Fun and Gun Era under Steve Spurrier, died on Tuesday at his Tampa home. He was 67.

    According to tampabay.com, Reaves was found by his son David, who checked on him after he was not heard from in several days. His death is under investigation by the Hillsborough County Medical examiner.

    Reaves played at Florida from 1969-1971 and broke the passing records that were held bygd Spurrier. Reaves is still seventh on UF’s all-time school career passing yardage list with 7,549 in three years (freshman could not play varsity sports at the time) and eighth in TD passes (54).

    When he left school, Reaves was the NCAA career leader in yardage and touchdowns. UF went 20-12-1 during his three years, including a 9-1-1 record when he was a sophomore.

    Early life

    Reeves was born and grew up in Bradenton, Florida and attended Southeast High School, where he played football alongside NFL wide receiver Peter Warrick. As a senior, he led the Seminoles to a perfect record and a Class 4A state championship and broke the school's record for touchdown passes in a season.[2]

    College career

    Reeves had to sit out his freshman season due to academic issues. As a sophomore, he played in six games at quarterback and completed 26 of 57 passes for 285 yards with one touchdown and six interceptions. Reeves missed most of the following spring practice due to spinal meningitis, but eventually worked his way to becoming the Boilermakers' starting quarterback in the middle of the season before
