Luis Jimenez Y Aranda Biography
Luis Jiménez Aranda was a French painter, born in Seville on 21 June 1845 and died on 1 March 1928 in Pontoise. He was known for his genre and costumbriste works. He got his first art lessons from his older brother, José, and later studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría under the direction of Eduardo Cano and Antonio Cabral Bejarano. In 1868, with the support of a patron, he had the opportunity to travel to Rome and complete his studies with Marià Fortuny. Subsequently, he moved to Pontoise, where he lived until the end of his life. In the 1880s, he began to paint ett plein air in the surrounding area. He participated in numerous exhibitions at the Salon, receiving various awards, including an honorable mention in 1864 for a painting depicting Christopher Columbus. Luis Jiménez Aranda died on March 1, 1928 in Pontoise.

Luis Jiménez Aranda was a Spanish🎨-born French painter🎨 of genre scenes🎨; many in costumbrista style. His brothers, José and Manuel also became painters.
His first art lessons came from his older brother, José, followed by classes at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría under the direction of Eduardo Cano and Antonio Cabral Bejarano.
In 1868, thanks to a four year stipend from a wealthy patron, he went to Rome to see the Old Masters and complete his studies with Marià Fortuny🎨.
In return, he had to send back a painting every year. He remained there after his stipend expired, until 1874, sharing a home with his friends, José Villegas Cordero and Francisco Peralta del Campo.
They also took classes together from Eduardo Rosales.
At that time, he and his Italian wife Lucia moved to Paris and made the acquaintance of the art dealer, Adolphe Goupil.
Two years later, he moved to Pontoise, possibly after going there to meet Camille Pissarro🎨.

Spanish painter of historical genre and naturalist subjects. He was the younger brother of painter José Jiménez Aranda, whose meticulously rendered historical genre paintings greatly influenced the young Luis.
Having studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Seville, Luis went to Rome to work for some time before following his brother to Paris where he settled in 1876. A large number of Spanish painters were working in Paris at that time and tillsammans they frequently derived their inspiration from France. However, the character of their work remained essentially Spanish. Luis Jiménez Aranda delighted in representing the lifestyle of Spain and her people. His work was extremely well received in his adoptive country where he exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1878 onwards, and in Germany, where he exhibited in Munich and Berlin, receiving awards in both cities.
