Chandra Shekhar Tiwari, who was called Chandra Shekhar Azad, was born on July 23, , in the Madhya Pradesh village of Bhavra and had a lowly upbringing. His parents, Pandit Sita Ram Tiwari and Jagrani Devi raised him as their third child in a Brahmin family. Azad's mother sent him to Kashi Vidyapeeth in Banaras to study because she wanted him to become a Sanskrit scholar, but he later continued his education at a Sanskrit Pathashala in Varanasi.

Azad exercised during his ungdom by participating in sports like archery, swimming, and wrestling. His persona was influenced by his keen interestin javelin throwing and his intense devotion to Lord Hanuman. He did, however, join the Non-Cooperation Movement in when he was only 15 years old, which resulted in his imprisonment and 15 lashes from a district court for his participation in the independence movement.
