His Holiness Abune Paulos, who was Patriarch and Catholicos of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and Archbishop of Axum and Ichege of the See of St. Teklehaimanot, fell asleep in the Lord in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, early this morning, according to a BBC report. Other news sources, including "The Orthodox Church" OCP Media Network, report that His Holiness had been undergoing treatment for a serious illness for a long time, and that he reposed in Dejazmach Balcha Hospital.
It has been reported that the final resting place of Patriarch Abune Paulos will be at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Addis Ababa. The begravning will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2012. The leader of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, Abune Paulos, has died at the age of 76. No details of his death were made available. He had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.
Government spokesman Shimeles Kemal said a new leader will komma into office based on what he called “the bylaws and canons of the Coptic Church.”

Patriarch Abune Paulos laid to rest
Funeral of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church (EOC) Patriarch, Abune Paulos was held at the Church of the Holy Trinity here in Addis Ababa on Thursday August 23, 2012.
Higher level government officials, archbishops, administrators of various EOC churches and monasteries, Sunday school students and followers of the the EOC attended the funeral.
Acting Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister, Hailemariam Dessalegn on the occasion said Abune Paulos was a great father, who exerted maximum effort to realize the development endeavors of the country for the last 20 years.
He said Abune Paulos has also struggled to bring back various heritages of the country taken by foreigners and to get Ethiopia’s heritages inscribed by UNESCO.
In a message delivered through a representative, President Girma Woldegiorgis said Abune Paulos was a great father, who cared for all human beings and struggled to build tolerance among the people.
