David Rastovich
David 'Rasta' Rastovich (b. ), professional surfer and conservation activist, was born in rural New Zealand. At the age of five he moved with his parents to the Gold Coast, where in time he began to compete in junior surf lifesaving and surfing events. He has won numerous titles in iron man, paddling and surfing events, including a world junior surfing title. Rastovich developed a sense of environmental awareness as a young man. In , outside the International Whaling kommission meeting in Italy, he established the conservation group Surfers for Sanctuaries with marine conservationist Howie Cooke. Later, this group evolved into Surfers for Cetaceans, focusing on the protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises. More recently he has supported the activities of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Before I get down to the details of being Dave ‘Rasta’ Rastovich today, lets have a quick look at his life so far:
• Born 31 December in Auckland, New Zealand
• Grew up on a farm
• Dad was in New Zealand’s Special Forces, but became a holistic healer
• Moved to the Gold Coast aged 6
• Won numerous junior lifesaving, paddleboard and surfing competitions
• Won the U16 World Grommet Champs in Bali
• Left the WQS to be a professional free surfer and ocean activist
• In , married a professional mermaid (Hannah Fraser), now divorced
