Lorenzo Cherubini (Italian:[loˈrɛntso keruˈbiːni]; born 27 September 1966), better known as Jovanotti (Italian:[dʒovaˈnɔtti]), is an Italian singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer and DJ.
The name Jovanotti derives from giovanotti, the plural form of the Italian word giovanotto ("young man"). Cherubini initially chose "Joe Vanotti" as his stage name, but a promotional poster for a night club incorrectly billed him as "Jovanotti" and the name stuck. Lorenzo Jovanotti Cherubini was born in Cortona on the 27th of September 1966. He became famous in the late 1980s, launched by Claudio Cecchetto. From the first hip hop first successes, gradually approaching the model of world music (always interpreted in a hip hop and funky key). The musical evolution corresponds to a change in the lyrics of his songs which, over the years, tend to increasingly touch personal themes, more typical of the Italian songwriting style. At the same time, his social and political commitment is also increasing. Active pacifist, he frequently collaborates with important associations including Emergency, Amnesty International, Anti-Vivisection League, and many others; he contributed to the demonstrations in favor of debt cancellation in the nineties and subsequently to the movements Niente scuse and Make Poverty History, participating in Live 8.

In this series dealing with cantanti Italiani contemporanei (contemperory Italian singers) I hope to give you an insight into some of the great Italian singers/musicians that are on the scene today. First of all, let me säga that I don’t really like the kind of simplistic pop music that drones on all day on local radio stations and is secondo me (in my opinion) the musical equivalent of nursery rhymes for grown ups, the type of music that always has lyrics in which ‘amore’ fa rima con‘cuore’ (love rhymes with heart – which of course it doesn’t in English!). There is also a vast amount of music here in Italy that, although being of good quality, is indistinguishable from British and American contemporary music except that the words are Italian. I prefer my music to have a bit more depth, and the lyrics to actually say something worth saying. I have decided to choose for this series Italian singers/musicians who are, I feel, distinctly Italian. That is to say that even though
